Pet Ultrasound

Pet Ultrasound at Rose Creek Animal Clinic, Herriman, UT

Rose Creek Animal Clinic has teamed up with a mobile ultrasound service called VetMed Consultants, allowing for abdominal ultrasound and echocardiogram procedures for your pet to be performed directly within our clinic, rather than requiring a separate trip to a specialized facility. This ensures your pet can receive high-quality imaging by imaging specialists right here, in a familiar and comfortable environment, under the supervision of our veterinary team.  This arrangement offers greater convenience for you and potentially reduces stress for your pet; having the ultrasound performed within the familiar confines of the hospital may help pets feel more at ease during the procedure.

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and powerful diagnostic tool for your dog or cat. Using high-frequency sound waves, we can create real-time images of your pet’s internal organs, blood vessels, and even developing puppies or kittens!

Ultrasound for Pets FAQs

  • Non-invasive and Painless: No surgery or discomfort for your furry companion. They can usually relax comfortably during the procedure.
  • Detailed Imaging: Ultrasound provides clear pictures of soft tissues that X-rays might miss.
  • Early Detection: We can identify abnormalities, tumors, fluid buildup, and other issues in their early stages, leading to quicker treatment.
  • Guidance for Procedures: Ultrasound can guide biopsies and fluid aspiration, making these procedures more precise and less invasive.
  • Monitoring Pregnancy: For expecting pet parents, ultrasound allows us to monitor the health and development of the litter.

No Radiation: Unlike X-rays, ultrasound uses sound waves, making it a safe option for repeated examinations.

A: An echocardiogram for pets is a non-invasive ultrasound of the heart that allows a veterinarian to evaluate your pet’s heart in real time. It’s a critical diagnostic tool for assessing heart health in both dogs and cats.

What It Shows:

An echocardiogram provides detailed images of:

  • The size and shape of your pet’s heart
  • The function of the heart valves
  • Blood flow through the chambers and vessels
  • The thickness and motion of the heart walls

Why It’s Performed:

A pet echocardiogram is used to:

  • Diagnose heart disease (e.g., congestive heart failure, valve disorders, cardiomyopathy)
  • Monitor known heart conditions

Evaluate symptoms like:

  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fainting or lethargy
  • Heart murmurs detected during a physical exam

Your veterinarian might recommend an ultrasound for various reasons, including:

  • Investigating abdominal pain or distension
  • Evaluating organ function (liver, kidneys, spleen, etc.)
  • Diagnosing heart conditions
  • Examining the bladder and prostate
  • Detecting foreign objects
  • Monitoring pregnancies
  • Guiding biopsies of internal organs

The ultrasound procedure is typically quick and stress-free. Some pets require a light, intravenous sedation for ultrasounds. Your pet will lie comfortably on a padded table, and a cool gel will be applied to their fur. Your pet may need to be shaved to ensure good contact with the ultrasound probe. The skilled ultrasonography team will gently move the probe over the area of interest, and the images will be displayed on a monitor in real-time. Every study comes with a thorough report of all of the findings and a consultation about the findings with our veterinary team, including a discussion of next steps.
